The author fails to realize that "traditional societal structures... and the benefits of living in a meritocracy" are incompatible, unless his/her understanding of meritocracy is vastly different from the accepted one (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meritocracy).
The author does not realize many things, she is a journalist, not a philosopher. But I think her story is interesting and educational. Realignment of the political parties and, more generally, political forces in the USA that is now happening is reminiscent of similar proceses in the 1910s, 1930s, 1960s. Former "progressives" are now becoming regressive and so on.
