I can imagine in late 2001 asking a question of myself in 2005:

What’s the main story? The smallpox quarantine? Fallout from the Iranian – Israeli exchange contaminating Indian crops? A series of bombings in heartland malls?

"Well, no – the big story today has to do with soldiers mishandling terrorists' holy texts at a detention center."

Mishandling? How? Like, you mean, they opened it up without first checking to see if it was ticking, and it blew up –

"No, they handled it in a way that disrespected it. Infidels are supposed to use gloves."

Oh. So we lost, then.

That's enough of politics for today. (Must be a really slow day.)

I also don't see what's the big deal. If we are allowed to burn the American flag, we sure as hell are allowed to pee on Quran (whether it happened or not is immaterial)... I won't do either because it is in a very bad taste, but the right is important ;)

Yeah :) But I don't think we're losing anything but some battles of the propaganda war, and we're only losing those to the extent we're doing questionable stuff ourselves. For example, this could only become stuff of the scandal in the West after Abu Graib - nobody would give a flying fuck about the mistreatment of Quran after 9/11 or after the invasion of Afghanistan...
