The Kurds are not going to split from Iraq until it is absolutely in their interest to do so and not while the American forces are present. While they are not agitating for separation, they are acknowledging now that it is inevitable.
In my book, this is not a bad idea. The value of having access to the riches of soil (like oil and gas) are overrated long-term. Of course, short-term they can help to raise the standard of living, so it is not a bad thing per se. But I would be satisfied to see a free Kurdistan. Even considering all the problems (including potential problems) with Kurdish portions of Turkey, as well as (to a lesser extent) Syria.

Of course, I am far from being an expert on that area.
