Marathon runners run because they like it, and there is an industry which, granted, is a niche industry, but still, with many thousands of enthusiasts, is not negligible. People who run or jog regularly are its good customers. Marathon is to them like triple (and other multiple) ironman is to marathon, cream of the crop.
Every week there is a long-distance (marathon, half-marathon, 50K etc) run, usually several, somewhere in the US. Plus some people run long distance just for fun. Nobody televises them: they do not care about publicity. I am sure this woman does not either, and this is why she remains relatively unknown. People who created Boston marathon cared about publicity, because they wanted to promote awareness. You can run on the cheap around your neighborhood.
