Update.

Where is that?
Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 08:19 pm (UTC)
And that is a VERY good question. Why does not it reflect the location in any meaningful way? We need to let the good Google guys know.

(the answer is Sokolniky area, Moscow, Russia)

I can think of more than a few improvements I'd like to see to Google maps (there is also no scale on the maps, and you can't "bookmark" favorite places on maps for future reference).
Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 09:36 pm (UTC)
You're right about scale.

You can bookmark (how else would you be able to see cema's childhood sandbox? :))) - by clicking the "link to this page" link to the right of the map. Not very intuitive, I give you that.
Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 09:39 pm (UTC)
Right. But you can't have a map full of bookmarked locations. Like, I'd like to create a map with an area of 5-miles radius of my house with my favorite restaurants and bookstores and things marked all together.
Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 09:49 pm (UTC)
That would be very useful on the map, not on the photo. :-)

Okay, I misunderstood what you meant by bookmarking. And I do agree with cema, that it's probably better left to the map part of the engine - not that the map part does it.

It's in the Sokolniki region in Moscow. If you look at any map of Moscow, in its NE part you will see a green wedge of a park (becoming a forest and spreading outside of the city). The end of the wedge is more or less what you can see on the photo; it's the SW corner of the Sokolniki park.

I lived there since I was 5 until I moved here; my dad still lives there. You can't see it clearly, but it's mostly 12-storey buildings. There is one that stretches along the street across the park in the middle of the picture, and a shorter one which is a notch inside (a few meters further from the street). The shorter one is mine.

The place is much greener than a typical Moscow neighborhood, even portions outside of the park zone.

The word Sokolniki means "Falconers", sokol being a falcon, and the place being where the czars used to hunt and those falconers used to live. Some old toponymy is still retained around the place, which is very nice, especially compared to all the renaming and re-renaming of downtown streets and places. "The Street of 26 Comissars of Baku" etc.

Thanks. I actually ran your post through altavista's babelfish and got this:

"Our court in Sokolniks. (directly to the south from the park; there are no larger pictures like.)"

Was that any good of a translation?
Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 09:54 pm (UTC)
It was almost better than my English when I lived there.

"Our courtyard in Sokolniki. Straight (or directly, or immediately) to the south of the park; seems like no larger pictures are [available] there". Not bad, in fact. Better than the usual Babelfish.
