As the full horror of this sinks in, thousands of desperate columnists are asking if the entire political agenda of George Bush's second term will not still be damaged in some terribly satisfying way.
The answer is almost certainly yes, provided that the entire political agenda of George Bush's second term consists of repealing the 22nd Amendment. Otherwise, with a clear Republican majority in both Houses of Congress, he can carry on doing pretty much whatever he likes.
Mr., ehm, O'Toole, ehm, seems to have forgotten that elections in US Congress (which includes electing the entire House of Representatives) are every two years.
It will. However, Bush is not going to the next elections, and the party might happily concentrate on selecting a better candidate. I just hope that the DEmocrats do the same; their most recent record has been pathetic.
Yeah... so it looks like we are facing a legislative stalemate, and a lame-duck government unable to pass anything non-trvial... possibly for as long as 3 years...
:-) Of course, it's not clear whether this is necessarily so bad :-) But it makes me uneasy... We'll see how well can this place run on auto-pilot...
> the party might happily concentrate on selecting a better candidate
But even the political life of the country is actually not mostly about "the next elections", at least not 3 years in advance. And the candidates are being selected during the primary season, it's not like there are some shady party mechanisms which can do too much before that. And it's the business of the candidates (and their supporters) to emerge, rather than party business...
