David told me once how his mother evacuated from Germany when she was...4, I think?

David's grandmother bought his grandfather's freedom out of Dachau and paid for the family's escape from Austria. Yes, I think it was when she was around 4. The rest of their family perished.

Such things are difficult even to imagine.

Does he ostracize anybody putting the link to that photo?

No, he wrote something to the effect that he is tired of reading how bad it is etc, and if hee sees that again, he would take measures. :-)

Although, I do not think that it is that bad. (Certainly, the meme is out, but bullshit is the mass media's trade.) Someone (I think it was [livejournal.com profile] pepel) suggested it may be healthy for the girls; I do not know, it could be. Of course, a parallel with similar pictures from the Soviet children's books (with people, including teenagers, writing "On Berlin" and "For my father" and so on on large munitions) is immediate.

On the other hand, had I been a commander at the scene, I would not let any civilians, let alone children, anywhere near there.

Ну более-менее. Но в жизни его, кажется, больше, чем в ЖЖ.
