The big question really is, IMHO anyway, whether anything can be done at all. Then the question becomes is he doing the right thing- not whether we can trust him. That would be too boring- who gives a crap whether some actor or comedian trusts anyone on issues of economy, or monetary policy.
There is a very useful exercise in some card games- what is the best strategy with a loosing hand (bridge comes to mind, Boston whist as well in some situations). Beauty, of course, is that after certain moves game changes dramatically. I.e. if you loose a lot of chips in Texas hold them, no limit- your strategy would need to become different- you can't go in on every round, unless you're planning on winning the pot. the more you loose more sure you have to be on your bets.
