Star Trek as a socialist enterprise

Ilya is explaining (quite correctly) that the Start Trek Federation is a socialist state. Its political evolution has not been described well in the lore (political aspects have not been emphasized at all), but it may be interesting to look at sci fi genre from this point of view. Especially, as Ilya points out, that most of the people have their vision of the future formed by such movies and books more than by serious scientific literature.

He is asking if the latest movie explains how the Federation became socialist. I watched the movie yesterday and can say that there is no explanation because it is happening in an alternative reality. Although I have noticed that some people did not quite realize it, even though it is quite explicit from the start.

This, I think, is one of the reasons the Firefly/Serenity universe is more interesting: it is more realistic. I guess it was made so because it is closer to our time.

Uh, yes, there were plenty of reds in Hollywood (and beyond) and still are, but I am not sure how destructive their role is. Not very constructive, that is certain.

The Federation is evidently "socialist" since before the divergence point (JTK's birth and the Kelvin accident), so the AU doesn't influence its orientation.

But of course, there is no explanation as such; the Trek Earth, more or less, gravitates towards the Strugatzky Noontide reality, which is especially (as Spock would have said) fascinating.
