Снова про статью из Ланцета с подсчётом погибших иракцев.

Я успел только начать её читать. Впечатление такое: статья слабая. Результат недостаточно обоснован, точнее: в условиях, описанных в статье, никакую оценку толком дать нельзя вообще. Следовало тщательнее изучить как ошибку измерения, так и ошибку моделирования. Но журнал торопился, видимо, по вненаучным причинам.

Статью с разной степенью глубины разбирали в блогах, перечисленных в предыдущей записи.

Если будет время и желание, напишу подробнее. Впрочем, после выборов, скорее всего, это мало кому будет интересно. Останется ещё один миф, вот и всё.

Update. Пожалуй, я правильно сделал, что написал это. Обсуждение получилось любопытное.

Exactly: not very meaningful. And, as I mentioned above, the myth I am referring to is not so much about the number, as about the alleged fact that we have a scientifically proven number.

I am also disappointed (though cannot say surprised) that a respected scientific journal would lend its pages to a political partisan attack without a proper review.

We have a scientifically proven continuum of numbers - you get more numbers for the price of one (((-:

You can call it a partisan attack, only if they are saying things like "President Bush is to blame for all these deaths" or "these deaths could have been avoided if the US military command had a better plan". Simply reporting that the number of deaths is beteen 8 and 190K is not a partisan attack.

Reportedly, one of the authors requested that it be published before the US presidential elections. The editors seem to have complied. But this too is a hearsay. Too close to the elections to be comfortable about this all.
