In-dash CD/mp3 player

I want to get a CD/mp3 player for my car. Nothing fancy, just something that would play CD, CD-R, mp3 disks. Can you recommend me something? Or at least which features to look for?

A related question is installation; I would rather have it installed by a professional. Any recommendations?

It is not exactly what you have in mind, but you can use it even in a rented car.

I got mine (Panasonic CQ-DP383Q) there... No installation service though... I don't think you'll have any problem installing it yourself especially if you have friends with a warm garage...

Does it play wma files too?
Does it play mp3 files from a disk that has several folders, or a disk that has non-playable files in addition to playables?

I visited Best Buy and CircuitCity and tried to find reasonable online descriptions of what I had found there, but it seems a little overwhelming.

I would imagine that you can find plenty of professionals who can install it. I would try the dealership that sells this make of the car first.

Also, cema, check - Crutchfield has info on the particular sizes that can be installed in your car.

I have two different things. A portable USB MP3 player and one of those portable DVD players with 7inch monitors. Both are connected to the car through cassette adaptor. (But both my cars have tape decks).
DVD player plays MP3s stored on CD-R and/or DVD-/+Rs and CDs.

Using MP3 player with a cassette adaptor is probably the cheapest solution, plus you get to carry the player around and use it outside of the car, but this requires a tape deck. In the absence of it, I find myself in a strange agreement with arbat - the $15 transmitter is another el cheapo solution that does not involve gutting one's car.

I am not sure I want to have a special contraption in my car. Just a cd/mp3 player. My current thingy is an aftermarket Aiwa which plays cds ok (rarely skipping), but no mp3 support, and the controls are not particularly comfortable. I can live with it for a while longer, but I would rather have something in a few weeks.

CircuitCity сегодня дает бесплатную установку на некоторые модели (см. "5 hours specials"). Хотя у них бесплатная установка - почти каждый день, уже давно. Я ставилиа свой у них в начале лета бесплaтно (но нам он не очень нравится ((JVC KDDV5100))- хотим поменять)

I would second Arbat's opinion. I am using the Nomad jukebox for half a year now, and happy about it. You're basically getting a CD changer rolled into the deal for roughly the same money. And it's portable. And, if you're listening to large mp3 audiobooks (say 300-500Mb), that take a week of listening, you can "take them with you" wherever you go.

в первый раз за все время соглашусь с арбатом ;)

имхо, портативный мп3-плейер намного удобнее (скажем, можно слушать аудиокнижку по дороге, а потом взять плеейер в карман и слушать дальше через наушники)

проблема большинства сегодняшних плейеров в машину - они не поддерживают dvd-mp3 (а если поддерживают, то очень криво, как тот же JVC). CD - это вчерашний день (имхо)

Насчёт бесплатной установки, у них эта игра всё время. Да она и так стоит где-то $35 или около того. А в Best Buy, кажется, вообще всегда бесплатно.

CD во многом вчерашний день, но в течение как минимум нескольких лет без него будет никуда. И audiobooks, и простой музыки выпущено на сидишках очень много. Самому же, конечно, можно записать, что удобно.

Я видел cd/mp3 плееры с дырочками для портативных плееров. Даже с портом USB, хотя это и не так универсально, пожалуй. Может, подождать, пока чего-нибудь ещё не придумают? :-)

Dа, 35 - не много, но все равно приятно.
Мастер в CircuitCity (Burlington) поставил player, а входы-выходы не удосужился вывести (на нашем еще должен быть video output, kazhetsja, no oni ego zamurovali szadi) A tak - nichego sebe igrushka. DVDшки еще играет.

насчет вчерашнего дня я имел в виду не просто cd a cd-болванки (даже с записанными мп3) - 700мб это как-то мелковато по нынешним временам ;)
обычные сд-шки я даже не беру в расчет; даже покупные тут же перегоняются в мп3, благо 256kbs stereo практически не отличаются по качеству от оригинала

тех же самых аудиокнижек на один dvd-mp3 влезает штук 6-8 и в итоге это получается сильно компактнее груды сд-шек с мп3

дырки для портативных плейеров они делают очень неохотно (гады)

проблема внешних dvd/mp3 плейеров в основом в том, что они не помнят где их выключили в прошлый раз
