Carter's ambassador to the UN, Andrew Young, said "Khomeini will eventually be hailed as a saint." Carter's Iranian ambassador, William Sullivan, said, "Khomeini is a Gandhi-like figure."
Is this true? Did they actually say this? Was it consistent with the official policy of the US at the time?

Khomeini would've never had a chance, if not for Jimmy Carter.
I will never forget a huge pro-Khomeini demonstration in the financial district of San Francisco in the autumn of 1978, with representatives of the local democratic party chapter marching along with the crazed iranian youth, raising slogans like "Islamic Republic = Islamic Democracy!" and "Down with the bloody terror of the Shah's regime!"...
