Elections

I think many Americans elected BO because he is black. In the past people could have voted for a black man despite his color, and it is progress (and before that would not or could not vote for blacks etc). But when will people ignore the color altogether? That will be something.

[identity profile] mme-n-b.livejournal.com 2008-11-05 06:43 pm (UTC)(link)
If anyone could get elected because of being black Jesse Jackson would have had his Oval Office stint already. Obama was elected because he is not McCain and, by inference, not Bush or Palin.

I did not say that he was elected because he was black. I said I think many Americans voted for him because he was black, etc.

Not many. Most likely only those blacks that would otherwise not vote at all.

Almost all blacks who voted for BO, voted because he is black. They didn't give a flying you know what about his platform, etc. A lot of whites who voted for him, voted because he is black. The race was a humongous factor, no sense lying to ourselves – this was a reverse racism in action.

Its what I think today, too. Instead of rejecting a person right away for his skin color without considering his personality, as it was in the past, now people vote for a person because of his skin color, without considering his personality.

Извините, Сёма, но мне вот интересно, когда люди перестанут считать что точно знают, что у других людей в головах творится. That would be something, wouldn't it?

Может быть, когда другие люди перестанут с ними этим делиться.

His alternative was quite unfit for the purpose. I am very surprise that it was the best the republicans could do. Don't they have anybody normal (looking and speaking)?

when will people ignore the color altogether?

Call me a pessimist, but I say never. People have been at war with each other over racial, religious, tribal, and familial differences since the dawn of man. And ever will it be until we are all completely blended. I think we're more likely to exterminate ourselves before that ever happens.

[identity profile] cema.livejournal.com 2008-11-06 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Well, certainly the way I formulated it, the answer is "never". However, I did not quite phrase it right. For example, we obviously do not (and do not want to) completely ignore the differences between men and women, or else our social life would be very difficult, but we ignore them (or at least try to ignore them) whenever they are not applicable, like setting up salaries and grading exams. Just like that, I would not expect (or even want) people not to notice the skin color, but I would want them to pay no more attention to it than they do to the eye color. Maybe eventually.

"when will people ignore the color altogether?"

I believe yesterday was the first huge step in that direction, actually.

It was a step in that direction, but definitely not the first step. And I am not really sure how big it was. Although this is one of those cases where perception means a lot, and if a lot of people perceive it as important (which they do), it becomes important.
