I think many Americans elected BO because he is black. In the past people could have voted for a black man despite his color, and it is progress (and before that would not or could not vote for blacks etc). But when will people ignore the color altogether? That will be something.

If anyone could get elected because of being black Jesse Jackson would have had his Oval Office stint already. Obama was elected because he is not McCain and, by inference, not Bush or Palin.

I did not say that he was elected because he was black. I said I think many Americans voted for him because he was black, etc.
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 07:08 pm (UTC)
Not many. Most likely only those blacks that would otherwise not vote at all.
Thursday, November 6th, 2008 05:37 am (UTC)
Many whites too.

Very likely, but people regularly vote on the basis of hairstyle. What's important is that this time around this wasn't the main distinguishing characteristic that got a president elected.

In presidential elections in the US? I do not think so.

There were, as I recall, only two bald presidents elected (Ford doesn't count, no one voted for him) out of 44, Van Buren (1836 or so) and Eisenhower. If that doesn't convince you - reread the hype about Palin's wardrobe.

I still think it's the shorter last name that won him the elections

Almost all blacks who voted for BO, voted because he is black. They didn't give a flying you know what about his platform, etc. A lot of whites who voted for him, voted because he is black. The race was a humongous factor, no sense lying to ourselves – this was a reverse racism in action.
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 09:21 pm (UTC)
And here's a perfect example of a statement that's both racist and wrong.
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 09:34 pm (UTC)
What was the meaning of miles long lines in inner city precincts? You don't understand- it's for people like me skin color doesn't matter. I would 've voted for BO if he expressed my conservative views. I resent the fact that he was elected because of his color and as Cema said, not despite.

Their residents wanted to vote for a left-wing politician?

"What was the meaning of miles long lines in inner city precincts? "

Hmmm... probably a different meaning for everyone standing in the line.

"You don't understand- it's for people like me ..."
I do understand.

How do you know?

Blacks tend to vote Democratic. 93% of the Washington DC vote went to Obama, who is black, but then 89% went to Kerry, who is white.
Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 09:38 pm (UTC)
I am not talking %, I am talking actual number. Record high number of blacks voted this year. 93% of them for BO.

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 10:00 pm (UTC)
:)
Thursday, November 6th, 2008 05:40 am (UTC)
Thursday, November 6th, 2008 02:01 pm (UTC)

Thursday, November 6th, 2008 01:55 pm (UTC)
